Essay
Corruption is one of the most debated topics in our society. Corruption is considered to be deep-rooted in our society in every possible department of life. Before discussing about corruption in length, first, we have to define what corruption actually means. In simple terms, corruption is dishonest and fraudulent conduct by those in power. The most common practice of corruption is bribery which is strictly prohibited in Islam, condemning both parties.
Corruption is classified into three tiers. The first one is known as petty or small kind of corruption that only covers on a little scale. For example, if a shopkeeper mixes crushed stones in spices to increase weight, he is, then, indulging himself in a petty kind of corruption. The second tier of corruption is that of grand corruption, which is propelled on a massive political level. That kind of corruption is pierced to a systematic degree that cannot be rooted out easily. For example, the money-sucking clerks demanding money, just for a little sign is a fine example of systemic corruption as the money extorted is equally distributed among all the clerks while the people above them claiming a large share of "nazraana".
Unfortunately, Pakistan is suffering from a worse, not the worst, kind of corruption. Transparency International places Pakistan on 124th among the corrupt countries. If we look around, corruption seems to make its presence everywhere around us. From small shops to large corporations, from small offices to large governmental enclaves, heck even PPSC has not saved itself from the filthy clutches of corruption.
The influence of corruption can be caused by many reasons. The first and foremost cause behind corruption is the poor accountability of the authorities who take a fancy to grab money by unfair means in return for providing unauthorized services to the ones from whom they receive that money. For instance, selling a government job in lacs to a specific person. The accountability system we have does not take these authorities into consideration and creates problems for the people without power. The second cause behind corruption is the poor performance of the governmental institutes but this again is propelled by the third factor and that is the small salaries of the government employees as the inflation rate is at its peak and everything, from education to medicine is expensive. Therefore, government workers tend to receive bribes in order to meet their financial needs, both of themselves and their children. While the big guns like to indulge themselves in corruption because their "small" salaries are unable to provide enough value to their lifestyle. Fourthly, our judiciary is incapable to cope with exemplary punishments to those who have committed these sort of crimes regardless of their rank. Fifthly, lack of education is another but minor cause behind the eruption of corruption as without proper education, they cannot differentiate between what is morally and socially right and wrong.
The effects of corruption in our society are numerous and dangerous. Firstly, the aftermath of corruption comes as economical and social injustice because a majority of talented people are not given their due place and importance in [governmental] machinery. Secondly, corruption in economical spheres gives rise to inflation and price-hike. Thirdly, it halts the performance and achievements of the government as the machinery does not function the way it had to. Finally, it widens the gap between the poor and the rich as the rich grows richer in corruption while the poor grows poorer. Thus social and economical instability grows at its peak.
In order to alleviate the tumorous corruption in our country, first, we have to make our laws more strong and the judiciary, more active so that exemplary punishments should be awarded to those who are found indulging in promoting corruption. Secondly, a proper medium of accountability should be set up. National Accountability Bureau should be made transparent and impartial while dealing with the cases of corruption instead of being a lethal weapon of political vengeance. Thirdly, freedom of media must be ensured so that the corrupt people should be put on shame. Our police are notoriously famous for taking bribes. Therefore, it must be reformed. Finally, the local government must be empowered enough for the betterment of local infrastructure.
Corruption is, no doubt, one of the major problems that have threatened the existence of social, moral and economical stability in Pakistan. Its complete eradication is not fully possible. However, it must be lowered significantly for the progress of our nation.
