He is considered a realist, naturalist and existentialist (the one who explores the origins of everything).

Isben's writing career spans from 1850 to 1899. He wrote a significant amount of plays. His dramatic career is divided into these phases: 

The first phase: In the first phase, he wrote plays in verse. 

Plays: Brand and Peer Gint

The Second Phase: Isben's second phase was centred around highlighting social issues of his society. A Doll's House is one of the most prominent plays of this phase. Ghosts, Enemy of The People are also some honourable mentions for this dramatic period. 

The Third Phase: In hia third literary phase: he wrote in response to the criticism he received. A high emphasis on symbolism is present in this phase.
