A Short Synopsis to the Story of The Faerie Queene Book 1

Canto 2

 

Not having satisfied from the failure of Archimago's first plan, he again plots another to betray the Knight. He, then creates a fake young man and sends the false Una for practising immoral things. On seeing the "chaste" Una, playing with a person, he, immediately with Dwarf, leaves the hut of The Old Man.
The actual Una, wakes up and finds the Knight has left her. She gets out in the wilderness to find the Knight. The Wizard Dude transformed into Red Cross Knight.
On his way, the Knight notices a Saracen named Sans foy, flirting with a young lady. The Saracen, a stout fellow, fights with the knight and gets killed by him. The lady begs pardon and sets herself with the knight for the rest of the journey.

 

Canto 3

 

Una is on the way for Red Cross Knight and is surprised by a lion which (seeming) attacks Una and is stopped by her innocence. Then it protects her from possible dangers. In the jungle, she meets the fake Knight, Sans loy, the brother of Sans foy, who has been killed by the Knight attacks the fake Knight. The lion attacks Sans loy but is killed by him. Through continuous attacks of Sans Loy, the Fake Knight gets unconscious/faint and his actual identity gets disclosed. Loy feels disappointed that he had wounded a wrong person. Then he kidnaps Una and tries to seduce her. She cries for help.

 

Canto 4

 

Fidessa (Duessa) brings the Knight into the palace of Queen Lucifera's palace which is built on sand. She, along with her six advisers (allegorically seven deadly sins) rules over the palace.

In the meanwhile, Sans Joy comes into the palace in a great rage and on seeing Red Cross Knight, he tries to fight with him but is stopped by Queen. She advises both of them to fight with each other in a duel after that day. Both agree.
At night, Fidessa secretly meets two fighters and confesses love (and support) hypocritically to both.

 

Canto 5

 

A duel between Sans joy and Red Cross Knight. The knight clearly is about to win the battle while the Night darkens everything and Sans Joy along with Duessa is taken to hell. Where he is treated by a physician, Aesculapius. Red Cross Knight, having informed by dwarf about a secret cell where the kings, queens and knights are kept in a miserable condition, leaves the palace of Pride abruptly.

 

Canto 6

 

Having wounded Archimago, Sans loy with Una goes into a forest and behaves with her in quite an immoral way. She cries for help and strange monster-like creatures appear, possessing heads of humans and legs and tails of goats and horses. They were called Satyrs and Fauns respectively. They led her to their God, Sylvanus who was also lustful. But they regarded her as a goddess. She still wanted to leave for the knight. Fortunately, she got a chance to meet Sir Satyrane, a knight who had extraordinary powers of taming the wild beasts.
While searching for Red Cross Knight, an old man (Archimago) gave the sad news of the knight's death. On hearing this, she fainted but Sir Satyrane promised her that he would take revenge of the knight.
On seeing Sans loy, the knight (Sir Satyrane) began fighting with him. Such a fierce fight frightened Una and she fled away from the fight.

 

Canto 7

 

Duessa, after finding the knight in a shade of a tree, she took the knight to a water spring. He drank some water from the spring and it was under a curse. Consequently, he lost his strength and fell entrapped into the sexual net of Duessa.
Then they heard a horrible noise of Monster Orgoglio, son of mother earth and Aeolus, the God of winds. The monster was towering the sky and its body was filled with dark wind and sins. It immediately defeated the knight and was about to kill him but was prevented by Duessa.
The monster locked the knight in a prison while rewarding the false Duessa with a beast to ride on and a robe to wear. The beast had seven snake-like heads and a powerful tail with the ability to fly.

The wandering dwarf met the wandering Una and told her the whole misery of the knight. She fainted twice but was restored by the dwarf.
Eventually, they came along the knight of all knights, Prince Arthur, riding on a horse and carrying a magical shield of the diamond, entrusted by a magician Merlin along with a magical stone-studded centred on his belt.

On his continuous queries, they told him their tale of misery and he promised to free the knight.

 

Canto 8

 

While fighting with the monster, he cut off its legs and arms and suddenly, his magical shield appeared and its glare killed the monster. Duessa's identity was disclosed and her punishment, she was deprived of her clothes. Without her clothes, her witchess identity got disclosed and she ran away to hide herself.

They searched for the Red Cross Knight in the castle of Orgoglio and found him for quite a while. He was reduced to a skeleton. His miserable condition had a remarkable effect on Una.

 

Canto 9

 

Prince Arthur told them his story that he was the son of a king but was brought up by an old but skilled warrior, Timon and learnt magic through Merlin. Then he told about a strange dream of A Fairy Queen. After his dream, he had been searching for his Fairy Queen. When they departed, they wished him the fulfilment of his dream.

On their way to the kingdom of Una's father, they saw two knights proclaiming to commit suicide, stirred by Despair. The knight was also negatively impressed by Despair, while debating. When he was about to commit suicide, Una stopped him saying that hardships of life are as essential as blessings. He was, somehow, stopped by accomplishing that merciless act.

 

Canto 10

 

Una felt that the knight was still weak. So she took him to the House of Holiness where he was warmly greeted by Charissa, Fidelia and Speranza (allegorically Charity, Fidelity and Hope). The knight was cured by a Physician, Patience. Then Mercie, an old lady took the knight to a hospital of seven prayers in where the pious men had vowed to devote their lives for the King of heaven. Then she took him to a hill and showed the sacred heavenly city of New Jerusalem. She prophesized that he would be the great Saint George of Merry  England. Then The Three departed from the House of Holiness

 

Canto 11

 

Then they went to Una's land where the monster Dragon had devastated the country. The giant had indestructible scales, wings, two fatal and sword-like-sharp stings and fire. The fight between the knight and Dragon continued for three days. At night, the monster was unable to fight with. That's why, the battle was suspended during the night. The knight constantly got defeated two days. But on the third day, he got victory over the monster.

 

Canto 12

 

Una's father warmly welcomed the victor and as was announced that the warrior who would kill the monster, would be awarded with the hand of Una. But during that merry moment, a strange thing happened. An old messenger brought the letter of Duessa, reading that the knight already had established relations with Fidessa. On inquiring, the knight confessed that he unconsciously, entrusted himself to the false lady but he did not have any relations with Duessa. Then Una said that Duessa was not a human being but a witch and she was responsible behind Una and Knight's miseries. The old messenger turned out to be, (huh, you guys guessed it, the old wizard dude) Archimago and was prisoned for his evil deeds.

Una was betrothed [engagement, منگنی] to Red Cross Knight. The Knight had to return to Queen Gloriana's kingdom as he had promised to serve the Queen for six years. After accomplishing his duties, he will return and will marry Una.
